The taste of Wormwood / Lyrics

1. The ghosts of Pripyat

Ferris wheel in a ghostly fair
Childhood memories
Reading books on a classroom floor

Some faded pictures of the past
Still hanging on the walls
To remind how it was before

The living have a duty to the dead
Forsaken heroes with no tears to shed

They keep dying one by one
Hammer and sickle will never divide
All the damage has been done
Broken fates, unsparing poison deep inside

Chasing rainbows in the night
A cloud of smoke, an eerie light
Radiations in the air
No one knew and no one care

Those golden years you left behind
Will stay forever in your mind
The sound of life on central square
The technological nightmare

They keep dying one by one
Hammer and sickle will never divide
All the damage has been done
Broken fates, unsparing poison deep inside

2. The day after

When I woke up this morning
All was quiet on the outside
The spring sun was reddening
But it smelled like something had died
A taste of iron in my mouth, a sudden shift within my head
This was better left unsaid

Some told about explosion, a minor incident
Some told about a fire, by the power plant
There was no hint of a disaster, an ordinary day
A silent death heading my way

Time was running out, no room for a long goodbye
Beyond the shadow of a doubt, no one care until you die
Welcome to the battlefield, atomic war had just begun
I knew my mind had come undone

My whole body was aching
I felt sick and sore
I saw my hands were shaking
Like never before

Foot patrols everywhere
I got filled up with fear
Faces with empty stare
The end was drawing near

Time was running out, no room for a long goodbye
Beyond the shadow of a doubt, no one care until you die
Welcome to the battlefield, atomic war had just begun
I knew my mind had come undone

3. On the roof of hell

Digging, clearing
Taking the soil and rubble out
Climbing, shoveling
Forget all the things you've heard about
Swallow your fear
A few seconds in a lifetime

Sawing, burying
To bring crisis under control
Dumping, spreading
Throwing sand into a burning hole
Behind the mask, a brave man
Giving his life for us to be safe

Suffering, lingering
The tears are coming to his eyes
No hugging or kissing
Nurses telling so many lies

Your brothers keep on fighting
On the roof of hell, how many will survive ?
Unaware of the danger
On the roof of hell, how many will be killed ?

Burly coat , rubber boots
Trying to stop the fission core
Graphite rods, evil roots
A crazy battle worth dying for

Your brothers keep on fighting
On the roof of hell, how many will survive ?
Unaware of the danger
On the roof of hell

4. The macabre pilgrimage

Listen to your guide
Do not leave the roads
Here the place where it all began
Stay away from weeds
Don't step on the moss
Keep yourself as safe as you can

Your day trip will remain
A painful memory
Don't bother to explain
That only eyes can see

Like a time machine
Travelling back and forth
Chilling sights await for your lens
A blind policy
And its crushing loss
Scary secrets told in confidence

Blackbirds and barn swallows
Above unfriendly skies
Anyway the wind blows
Before your very eyes
